Getting Your Car Back If It's Stolen

Has your vehicle been missing, stolen or involved in a touchy situation as of late? That's a huge problem to fix, especially if you don't know where to start. Even though Louisville, Kentucky is a normally peaceful place, car theft is an ever-present risk that vehicle owners face everywhere. That being said, vigilance is a must for drivers if they want to protect their vehicles from getting stolen. The problem that we're trying to deal with, however, is past tense. Your car was stolen. And you now want it back. The question is, can you get it back?

How To Get Your Car Back If It's StolenGetting your car back if it's stolen may be difficult but it's not impossible. Don't panic just yet. It doesn't help to lose your better judgment in situations like this. With the right help and the right guidance, rest assured that you will have your precious wheels back in your garage in no time.

The first step is to figure out what really happened to the vehicle. The vehicle could simply be borrowed by your friend, brother or co-worker without your knowledge. A more likely situation is that your vehicle has been towed away because you overlooked certain parking restrictions when parking your car. In this case, call the towing services or traffic department if there were any reports of your vehicle as of late. Failing that, ask around for witnesses about what happened to the car parked where you left it.

After determining that your vehicle was indeed stolen, it's time to report the theft. Do not hesitate to phone the incident to the authorities. Depending on how long you think your car has been missing, there is a good possibility that the thief hasn't driven it very far. So the faster you act the more likely the police will be able to find your vehicle quickly.

When you talk to the police, they may ask you several questions and the more you know the more help you will be to them. These questions might include:

- License plate number
- Make of the car
- Year of the car
- Model of the car
- Color of the car
- Are there any unique features that would help distinguish your car from all the others that are similar?
- When and where did you last see the vehicle?

The next thing to do is call your insurance agency. If your vehicle is retrieved, don't expect it to be in good condition. Reporting the car theft this early will make it easier for you later, should you need to file a claim for a stolen vehicle. Insurance agencies can be very helpful if they are brought up to speed sooner rather than later.

To sum up, getting your car after it has been stolen can be done by following a three-step process. First, check to see if it really was stolen. Second, report it to the authorities. And third, call your insurance provider as soon as you can.
