Are You a Fuel Efficient Driver?

Everyone hates to see gas prices on the rise and obviously we would rather be paying less than the current price. We often hold the oil companies or even the government responsible, but are you doing your part to "lower" those prices? Owning a super fuel efficient vehicle isn’t the only way to be green and cut costs. You as a driver can make your car more fuel efficient. Research shows that adopting fuel efficient driving techniques can make your vehicle 30% more fuel efficient. How? Take a look at these Are You a Fuel Efficient Driver? tips below.

1. Turn the engine on only when you're actually moving. Some may take this a little far, but at least turn off your car when parked. No matter what type of car you are driving, when your car is running it is using fuel. If you plan to sit in idle for more than a minute, turn off the engine to save fuel.

2. Avoid aggressive driving such as speeding, fast acceleration, and hard braking will help your car run more efficiently. These types of driving habits can increase fuel consumption by as much as 40%. Using cruise control when on the highway can help you to maintain a steady speed. Practice gradual acceleration and smooth breaking to help reduce fuel costs.

3. Keep your vehicle as light as possible. The heavier your car, the more fuel it has to burn in order to move the weight. Remove any unnecessary items you have stored in the trunk or other parts of the vehicle.

4. Have your car serviced regularly. Dirty oil, dirty air filters, bad spark plugs, under-inflated tires, etc. can all increase the amount of fuel your car consumes.

5. Carpool. Share rides with your friends or organize a carpool group with people you work with.

6. Don't drive. If your destination isn't that far, consider biking or even walking.

Adopting some of these techniques will have a positive impact on the environment and your wallet.
