5 Key Questions to Ask Before Renting an Apartment

In terms of location, you probably have your own reasons for choosing to find apartments for rent in a specific city or town in Kentucky. Factors like location are something that’s easy to research, but if it’s the apartment itself in question then you should definitely take the time to visit the site and ask your prospective landlord the questions listed below.Questions To Ask Before Renting An Apartment

1. What is its history?

How many owners has the apartment had? Has there been any incident in the past that led to the apartment suffering from serious structural damage? Are there any bug problems?

2. How much is the initial payment?

It’s normal for landlords to ask for a one to three months deposit or an advance on your rent. Sometimes, there are landlords who ask for both. Make sure to ask how much exactly your future landlord is expecting you to cough up and what exactly it is for. Don’t forget to ask if the deposit is refundable and lastly, get everything in writing.

3. What are the rules or policies that you and other tenants have to follow?

Don’t be mistaken into thinking that a landlord who has absolutely no rules at all is the better option. If something goes wrong, such as when another tenant or the landlord himself lets trespasses in your area, the lack of rules may prevent you from expecting any kind of help from your apartment’s owner.

Learn what the rules are and be sure to ask questions that particularly concern your situation but have not been addressed. If the landlord doesn't have any policies about pets and you have a German shepherd, better ask about that before making any payment.

4. Who pays for what?

Is electricity and water included in your rent? What if the heating system doesn’t work or one of the pipes in your kitchen bursts? Who pays for the cost of repair or installation of new equipment?

5. Is it insured?

Lastly, check if your prospective landlord has insured the property, including your unit. If it is, find out what’s included in the coverage and determine if you need to obtain additional insurance. Even if you’re only planning to stay a short period of time in the apartment, it’s still better to be safely insured than not.
